Our 5th grade class has been learning this week in Science all about growing and decomposing. Today 5th grade students sat up two separate experiments, which they will observe over the next 14 days. The first is growing chia seeds in various soil types. Students will watch and learn which types of soil allow the chia seeds to grow the most. The second experiment is observing bread decomposing and how different variables can speed up and slow down mold growth. The students chose to add honey, sugar, salt, and vinegar to the bread to see which molds and decomposes the quickest.

Our 5th graders have been learning about mixtures, solutions, physical, and chemical changes in Science over the last few weeks. Today, students measured the masses of glue, water, and borax separately. Then, mixed the ingredients together creating a homogeneous mixture with the same mass, which helped demonstrate the law of the conservation of mass! The students also observed that the new substance had very different properties from the starting materials.

We want to thank everyone who came to the game to support our volleyball team last night. It was nice having fans back in the gym to cheer on our team. I also appreciate all the fans that wore their masks at the game. We know and understand how difficult that is to some. In order for us to continue to allow fans in, we need all people in attendance to wear masks when they are not eating. Please do not make the school employees ask you to put your mask on. We livestream the games on our Facebook page so people who do not want to wear the mask or people who are not comfortable being around others right now can watch the games.

As of today, 8/25/21, we have no limits on attendance. Fans will be required to wear masks. We will have concessions this year. Please keep your mask on while waiting in line, of course if you are eating you can take your mask off. We will have someone live streaming our home games and hopefully our away games as well, incase you do not feel comfortable coming to the games. If attendance policies change, per governor's mandates, we will update you using our social media.

Parents and Guardians: Please read the following statement and complete the survey at the link below. Quarantined? How do I get back to school faster? Under rules from IDPH students that become a close contact may not have to quarantine. If you are unvaccinated and have no symptoms you can choose to be Covid tested. Parents will need to sign the consent for Covid testing. The school nursing office will test students that choose to take this step in order to stay at school on days 1, 3, 5, and 7 after they have been determined to be contacts. As long as you test negative you can remain in school and continue to participate in all activities with no quarantine. Currently, vaccinated students are not required by IDPH to be quarantined. Please keep in mind this is a survey to determine whether or not parents/guardians would be interested in Thompsonville exploring this option. https://forms.gle/asheYTGqkHtvugNA8

School will be starting tomorrow. This week we will be going 8 to 3. Starting next week we will be going 8 to 2. We will be going 8 to 2 in order for our teachers to contact their quarantined students from 2 to 3:15. This will help those students stay on track for them to have a smooth transition when they return off of quarantine. Students will receive a normal day at school with PE and lunch. We are hoping our quarantine numbers will go down as time goes on and we can get back to our regular 8 to 3 day. If you have any questions please feel free to contact the school.

With the recent mandate by the Governor we are releasing our Mask Plan for the school year. It is a 3 Phase Plan. We were hoping to start out in Phase 1, but we are going to start out in Phase 3 because of the mask mandate. The School Board, Administration, and Staff may not agree with the Governors decision on masks. However, we do have a responsibility to look out for the well being and health of our students, school, and community. This means we have to follow mandates from the Governor as well as other health and educational organizations. If we do not follow them, the school, as well as individuals could be held liable. That being said, we will not have one student at Thompsonville who will be required to wear their mask for the whole day. We will have mask breaks built into the schedule and teachers will be encouraged to get their kids outside and in areas large enough to safely social distance to be able to take their masks off. We are all in this together and we are still hoping for a more normal year than last year. We have no plans to do half days, other than our normally scheduled half days. To our knowledge we will be having sports and as of now, no limitations on who can come watch. If the sports are indoors then the players and spectators will be required to wear a mask. If the sports are outside then no masks will be required. We are hoping to be able to do concessions and everything at games like normal. We are still hopeful that this variant of COVID will run its course quicker than the last one and we will be able to move to Phase 2 or Phase 1 sooner rather than later. We already have students and staff who will not be able to start the school year on time because they are either positive with the virus or have to quarantine. So please have a plan in place in case your student will need to quarantine at some point during the year. Please read the Mask Plan and if you have any questions, contact the school. Please, also remember that this is a mandate that we may not agree with, but we have to follow.

Please email this to SenatorFowler59@gmail.com and severin@ilhousegop.org Parent Action Kit to Communicate with the Illinois General Assembly Directions: Copy and paste the message below in the form of an email to your senator and representative. It is recommended that you do not change the message below. It is important that a consistent and clear message is sent to the Illinois General Assembly that communities throughout the state of Illinois are requesting local control of the protocols regarding COVID-19 safety measures. _______________________________________________________________________ Email Communication to Illinois General Assembly Dear Insert Senator or Representative Name Here: This past year has been a challenging time for communities throughout the entire state of Illinois. Thank you for your leadership during the pandemic in terms of the guidance and resources used to support the work our schools do at a local level. There is no doubt that you personally have taken on several challenges in your role, and like local school leaders, many of these challenges had no clear winning outcomes. We hope to continue to have your support during this upcoming school year to ensure the safety of our students and communities while providing a high-quality educational experience. The purpose of this letter is to request local control in the implementation of COVID-19 safety measures and protocols utilized within each school district. We believe that local boards of education and superintendents are best positioned and capable of planning reasonable and safe approaches to educate the students of our communities. The past 16 months have provided our local leaders with ample experience and knowledge to lead locally with your support. We write to you to ask for your support in local district implementation. The guidance provided must not be a one-size-fits-all solution. Illinois is a large, diverse state filled with diverse school districts that educate students with unique needs and different barriers to learning. A plan that may be sensible and effective in one school district may not be sensible and effective in other districts. With your support, we can make the upcoming school year a memorable one that will help get education back-on-track by recovering learning loss, providing social-emotional support, and keeping our communities safe. Please consider allowing local control of school districts in terms of COVID-19 safety measures. Sincerely, Insert Your Name Here.

It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we announce the passing of one of our school family members. Mrs Debbie Heern, worked in our kitchen for over 25 years and drove a bus for our district for 10 years. She will be greatly missed, and our small school will not be the same without her. She has went through many trials in life, yet always had a smile on her face. She was willing to help anyone that needed it, especially the many students that she served in our school. She donated much of her free time in helping fundraise for St Judes. Our hearts and prayers go out to her family during this time. Debbie will always be a Thompsonville Tiger, and we know she will be watching down on us.

As we say goodbye to our students for the summer and this crazy school year, we want to thank all of the parents/guardians, and families that worked with us this difficult year. This year has been the most difficult year this school and its employees have seen in a generation. We want everyone to know that each decision that was made this year was in the best interest of the students that go to Thompsonville. We understand that not everyone agreed with our decisions, but we want to thank you for still supporting the school through this year. We want to also thank the students this year. We know the students suffered more than anyone else this year, but the majority of them still came to school every day and made the best of a bad situation. Thank You!! Enjoy Your Summer!! You have earned it!! We will have our plan for next year out in the next couple of weeks. I will tell you that August 10th will be the first day for student attendance.

Schelly (Kerley) Smiley is our next Alumni of the Week. I graduated from Thompsonville High School in 1990. After graduation I attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale for 2 years and graduated with an Associates of Science degree in 1992. In June of 1992 I married Greg Smileya Johnston City native. I then worked at Marion Memorial Hospital for several years as a phlebotomist and lab tech. In 1999, I returned to Southern Illinois University at Carbondale to complete my bachelor's degree. In May of 2005, I graduated with a degree in elementary education. In August 2005, I started teaching and I am currently completing my 17th year as an educator. I have taught 8th grade, 7th grade, 1st grade, Kindergarten and coached volleyball for many years. In 2013 I returned to school and completed a Master’s Degree in School Leadership. The last five years I have been a principal at Lincoln Elementary School in Johnston City, IL. Greg and I have two beautiful daughters, Allison and Ashley. Allison is a speech pathologist and Ashley is a school social worker. I am extremely proud of both my girls and all their accomplishments. We have been blessed with one grandson, Jase Johnson. It is hard to believe I have been out of high school for 31 years. When I look back to my school years I have many great memories. My favorite sport in high school was volleyball. Mr. Warren was my coach from 5th grade through my Senior year. His competitive drive made the game fun. Thank you Mr. Warren! While I was a coach at Johnston City, I had the opportunity to coach against Mr. Warren, that is a special memory for me. I also have to mention all the fun I had in Ms. Blades business classes! She made learning fun and I am grateful for that. I really enjoyed my time as a “Tiger”.

Kendall Marvel graduated in 1988 and is our next "Where Are They Now" alumni. A Southern Illinois native, Marvel began playing shows in bars at 10, and eventually moved to Nashville to pursue a career in songwriting. Shortly after arriving in Music City he penned Gary Allan’s first Top 5 hit “Right Where I Need to Be” and went on to have cuts by Chris Stapleton, Blake Shelton, Brothers Osborne, Jake Owen, George Strait, Jamey Johnson, Lee Ann Womack, and more. His monthly Kendell Marvel’s Honky Tonk Experience shows at Nashville’s Exit/In became a hot ticket in town, where he played a mix of originals and classics and was joined by notable guests including Cody Jinks, Brothers Osborne, Alison Krauss, Foo Fighters, Randy Houser and Ashley McBryde. In 2017, Marvel released his debut solo album, Lowdown & Lonesome and in October 2019, followed up with his second album Solid Gold Sounds, which he wrote and recorded in a matter of days and was co-produced by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys and David R. Ferguson. Marvel and Auerbach co-wrote nine of the album’s 10 songs that reflect on his life as an accomplished songwriter, singer, father and husband. “It was very easy and collaborative,” Auerbach says. “These songs had to tell the story about Kendell and his life as a songwriter because I wanted that to be a focus, too. He’s not craving the stage or craving the spotlight. This record comes from a humble place, which I really love.” “Kendell has this amazing voice, and when he backs it off a little bit, it opens up and sounds humongous,” Auerbach says. “It’s so resonant and the microphone just eats it up. We got him to sing a little softer on this record, not to actually sound softer, but so we could turn him up louder.” Marvel’s father worked as a welder in the coal mines of Southern Illinois and would frequently bring his buddies home to listen to his five-year-old son, who had an unusually deep singing voice for a kid. By 10 years old, he was singing with the band in a local dancehall. At 14, Marvel’s life took a tragic turn when his older brother was killed. His parents divorced shortly after that. For a fresh start, he transferred to a different high school, where he met his future wife. Basketball games and local gigs were keeping him up late – and teachers kindly overlooked his morning naps in the classroom. When he was around 17, he was introduced to an artist manager and music attorney in Nashville through a mutual acquaintance. Although Marvel wanted to be a recording artist, he heeded their advice about learning to write songs, too. “So I honed my craft,” he says, “and my motto was ‘I’ll try to write with people bigger than me.’ I still do that. There are always things to learn.” After high school, Marvel jumped into performing full time, but feeling burned out and needing to support a growing family, he took a job at a tire factory and essentially gave up on music. Then out of the blue, the Nashville attorney called to check in. Marvel lied and said he was still actively involved in music – and then realized it was, as he calls it, “do or die time.” At 28, Marvel moved to Nashville. An artist development deal with RCA didn’t pan out, so he turned to songwriting, allowing him the flexibility to see his kids grow up. “I wouldn’t change anything about that,” he says firmly. Today his deep songwriting catalog offers hits like Gary Allan’s “Right Where I Need to Be” and Chris Stapleton’s Grammy-winning single, “Either Way.” Country artists like Brothers Osborne, Jamey Johnson, Jake Owen, Blake Shelton, George Strait, and Lee Ann Womack have cut his songs, too. Meanwhile, witnessing the rise of individualistic artists like Jason Isbell, Kacey Musgraves, and Sturgill Simpson encouraged Marvel to get back in the game. “Those artists were saying things that most people weren’t saying, and they were writing what they knew,” Marvel observes. “They were doing it on their terms. That’s inspiring for a guy like me. Everybody wants to do their own thing, and if you can do that, and be your own person, I think you’re a fool not to do it.” Some of Kendell's favorite memories from high school include: Playing music with my shop teacher, JW Groves when I should have been learning how to weld and playing basketball.

Gretta Browning is our next Where Are They Now Alumni. She graduated in 1983. I graduated from Thompsonville High School in 1983. I wasn't really sure what to choose for my career path so I received an Associates of Arts and Science from Rend Lake College, also I cheered for the Rend Lake Warriors which was a lot of fun. In 1988 I graduated with an Associate Degree in Nursing and after graduation married my husband Mike with whom I had two wonderful children who we are very proud of - Jordan and Courtney. I worked at Marion Memorial Hospital for 12 years (Currently Heartland Regional). I have been working for the past 25 years at Southern Illinois Dermatology where my position is the Director of Nursing. One of my many duties is interviewing, hiring, and training our new nurses. I love spending time with my family and especially my 4 grandchildren- #5 is due in May! I have many fond memories of high school, spending time with friends, band, all the sports I participated in, but probably my favorites were cheerleading and band. Thank You Gretta for taking the time to do this. Thompsonville Schools is proud of you!

Julie Douglas (Lampley) is our next Where Are They Now Alumni. She graduated in 1995. After graduating Thompsonville High School as valedictorian in 1995, I enrolled at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. I was named one of the top 25 Most Distinguished Seniors in 1999, graduating magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences with microbiology, physics, and chemistry minors. I subsequently completed my Master of Science degree in Biology, focusing on neurobiology, cell growth and nerve regeneration with the assistance of Scanning and Transmission Electron microscopy. Unfortunately, I grew weary in a laboratory, and teaching was not for me! I returned to SIU, completing the Physician Assistant program in 2006. I immediately joined an orthopedic surgery practice, and later transitioned to internal medicine. After 10 years with a local hospital, I left a thriving internal medicine practice. I am currently employed by the Veteran’s Health Administration, striving to better the health and meet the needs of our nation’s heroes. I am currently in the process of applying to SIU’s Doctorate program, in hopes of continuing my education. I am thankful every day for the preparation by Mr. Womack! He taught me to think outside the box, and always be on my toes! I miss the days of cheerleading, volleyball, and softball (and all my amazing coaches)– I am currently reliving sports through my daughter! I cherish the relationships and experiences of growing up in a small town. I currently reside in Mt. Vernon, IL, with my husband Kyle and daughter Kylie.

Katie King (Jones) is this weeks "Where Are They At Now" Alumni. She is also one of our school family members. Graduation year: 2014 I completed my Associates Degree of Art and Science from Rend Lake College while playing softball. I then transferred to Eastern Illinois University where I received my Bachelor’s of Science with a major in Communication Disorders and Sciences and minor in Psychology. I continued at EIU to complete my Master’s of Communication Disorders and Sciences. This is my first year as a speech-language pathologist (SLP). I divide my time working at both Thompsonville and Galatia School Districts. As an SLP I assess, diagnose, and treat communication and swallowing which includes articulation, language, cognition, fluency, voice, hearing, social communication, swallowing, and other communication modalities (e.g. AAC). I most often work on articulation, language, and fluency with students who can range from preschool through 12th grade. Parents: Many students in this school may be eligible for Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer (P-EBT) Supplemental Nutrition Assistances Programs (SNAP) benefits during the 2020-2021 school year. P-EBT is a food assistance benefit for students who get free or reduced-price meals in schools under the National School Lunch Program, but – because of the pandemic – the school is not providing meals to the students at school. P-EBT benefits will help Illinois families buy food during the COVID-19 pandemic. Please click the link below to read about the Eligibility for Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) SNAP Benefits. https://5il.co/qfds

Good News Alert. We are happy to announce that our HS students will be having a spring homecoming/prom this year for our students on May 8th at the Eagles Nest at the lake. This will be open to all in person 9th -12th grade students. These students will be able to bring a guest with them, if they choose. Remote learners wanting to attend this event will need to start coming back in person by the start of the 4th quarter. (March 8th) We will have a meal catered on site. Students will need to buy tickets to the event to help offset some of the costs. 15 dollars for one person and 25 dollars for a couple. We want to greatly thank the Eagles Nest for allowing us to have this event for our students this year. They are great neighbors of the school and has worked with us before. Their facilities are both indoor and outdoor areas. If other schools are looking to have events this year I would strongly recommend you reach out to them.

Important Athletic Update! The Illinois Department of Public Health has issued rules and regulations that schools must follow in order to have sports this year. One rule is that all spectators must be 30 feet from the playing floor. Due to the limited size of our gym, it is simply not possible for us to meet this rule. We have measured and looked at many different options, however, we are unable to keep spectators 30 feet from the playing area. As a result, there will be NO SPECTATORS at any HOME games this year. We know this is very disappointing. However, this regulation is not something Thompsonville Schools can control, it is State policy.

As of now the Thompsonville School Board and administration have decided that we will stay with in person learning as long as we can. Please remember that this can change very fast and we could go to full remote. Some of the factors that could make us go remote are not having enough staff at the school, the governor mandating school closures, Bi-County recommending that schools close. So please continue to watch for updates and be patient with our district as we are still trying to make the best decisions for our students, staff, and community.

Parents/Guardians: We are having issues with students submitting work on time or at all. Every posted assignment K-12 is due at 11:59 p.m. the day after it is assigned. For example, an assignment posted on Monday is not due until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday. If you are having trouble getting an assignment completed, you MUST contact your child's teacher for an extension. If a teacher has not been contacted and work is not submitted by the due date, a zero will be assigned. It will be at the teacher's discretion if he or she will take late work. The administration is supporting the grading policies of the teachers. We encourage parents and students to look at assignments and ask questions when work is posted. Communication with your child's teacher is critical to his or her success. Please do not hesitate to reach out. Teachers are available M-F from 7:50-3:15. Teachers are not contractually obligated to answer emails or phone calls outside of these hours. This is why it is important to look at the material the day it is assigned--so teachers can contact you the following school day. We understand these are challenging times for everyone. Our teachers are doing a phenomenal job and we appreciate the support we have received from parents and the community!

Assignments are due the following day after they are assigned by 11:59pm. If teachers are marking off for those assignments that are turned in before that time, please contact the school. It was discussed having homework turned in by Sunday night as an option. We chose not to do that, in case there were technical issues and a student waited till the last minute to submit. We also felt that we wanted to make sure students are getting the content and not waiting until the week is over to show that, by that time the student is already a week behind. So we are turning in things throughout the week. Just like most small communities in our area we struggle with internet. We are paying over $2500 dollars a month to give hotspots to students in our district that did not have internet access. We are hoping next week that each student will have their own Chromebook to use. Yes, the administration of the school feels that students learn better digitally then with old fashion books. I do not remember a time when I walked into a place that had student age kids all reading a hard copy of a book. They are usually on their cell phones or tablets. Digital formats, once learned and bought into, will keep their attention longer than a book will. Most schools are going to all digital formats, because colleges and most careers are already doing that. Schools fighting the importance of digital learning will be doing a disservice to their students. Our original plan was to not bring students back to school until October. We wanted to try it earlier. Over 30% of our school district has chosen full remote. Until this Covid issue is over, we will continue to turn homework in and do things digitally. We have many rules that we have to follow in order to be compliant with the Illinois Department of Public Health. We are still hoping to bring back all students 4 days a week in October. This is not easy on anyone. If you have questions please call your teachers. If you are not liking what the teachers say please call the administration. If you do not like what they have to say then call the board members. The school appreciates all of the parents/guardians that are doing everything they can for their students during this time. We will all get through this together, as long as we are together.

Tomorrow the 23rd is our HS graduation at the school. It will be in the gym and start at 6pm. This is not open to the public. Each student is allowed 5 guests. We have names on the bleachers where each students' family needs to sit. The guest of the Marshall's will need to sit in the top row of the North East side of the gym. That is the side that you enter the second door in the commons area. If you have a person that is not able to climb up to their assigned area they will be allowed to sit on the front row of the same set of bleachers. All guests and students will need to wear a mask. This will be live streamed on our Facebook Page. After the ceremony students and families will be allowed to take pictures in the gym while practicing social distancing.

Senior students are not the only people whose last school year has been affected by this virus. Retiring teachers have lost out on the chance to finish their careers with students in front of them, interacting with students and teaching them. Not seeing that "I got it" moment for the last time. They are missing out on their last lunch conversations with their peers and joking with those they have had lunch with for a very long time. They were not offered the chance to say goodbye to their students and for students to say goodbye to them. People do not get into teaching for the money. People get into teaching for the students and wanting to be a small part of their journey as they become adults. For some students, they are a big part of that journey. We have one teacher retiring this year. Mrs Kelly Shires has taught at Thompsonville for 19 years. I know this is not the way that she wanted to end her career, but I also want her to know the way her career ended has no bearing on the positive impact that she has had on her students and coworkers. I know that a piece of this school will go when she leaves. Good Luck in Retirement Mrs. Shires. Please come back to see us. You will always have a home here.
