Today grade school summer camp read the book “Nya’s Long Walk” and learned how water pumps work. We worked together to create a water pump. 💦 We ended the day reading “Iqbal and His Ingenious Idea” about designing a solar cooker. We then made our own solar cookers to make s’mores! They were tasty! 🍫

Yesterday grade school read “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” and learned about how windmills make electricity and pump water. Students then made their own pinwheels. We also learned about how ice cream is made, read books about ice cream, made an ice cream cone craft, and enjoyed eating ice cream!🍦

🎢 Middle School Summer Camp focused on roller coasters and gravitational force today. We looked at how g-force makes a rider feel when they are on a roller coaster. The students created their biggest challenge yet...a marble roller coaster from paper and tape! The roller coaster was a lot of work and a success!

🚢⚓️🛥️Middle School Summer Camp learned about Archimedes' principle, the physical law of buoyancy. We made aluminum foil boats and tested their ability to carry a load of pennies. Students also made boats from anything they could find. They are so creative and all of their boats floated! We had to add some cooking to our day, so we made Rice Krispie Treats!

✈️🛬🛩️Middle School Summer Camp made paper airplanes to start our second week of camp! We learned how to record multiple flights on Google Sheets and create a chart of our flights. We created airplane launchers to make our airplanes soar. The students did a great job of revising their plans to get the longest flights possible!

Grade school read “The Watcher: Jane Goodall’s Life with Chimps” and learned about Jane Goodall and her studies of chimpanzees. 🐒 Students made tools using only 5 popsicle sticks, 5 rubber bands, and 2 plastic spoons to grab termites, like chimpanzees do. They raced to see who could catch the most termites in 15 seconds. (6 was the most!) Students also learned that chimpanzees throw stones to protect themselves. We then read “Scribble Stones” and decorated/painted stones. 🪨

Grade school read the book “If I Built a House” and built their very own design out of cardboard boxes.🏠 We then read “If I Built a School” and students drew what their dream school would look like. (A lot of students are hoping for a zipline on the playground.😂) We ended the day reading “Perfect Square”, discussing all the shapes, and making shapes with Play-Doh. 🔺🔸▪️

🌎🚀🌖We wrapped up our first week of Middle School Summer Camp by shooting off rockets we created in the gym. We experimented with the angle to get the longest path. Most of our rockets traveled past the half court line! Mrs. McFarland had to try it out too! We experimented with creating beautiful "tie-dye" planets by working with shaving cream and paint.

🔭🛰️🚀Our lunar module landings! Some of our "astronauts" survived, but others bounced right out! The students certainly let their creativity soar!

🌟💫🌟Wednesday's Middle School Summer Camp was stellar! We made a constellation guide for summer stargazing. Constellations were recreated from toothpicks and marshmallows (somehow the marshmallows kept disappearing!). We created our own version of a lunar lander and TRIED to keep our "astronauts" inside. We didn't get a picture, but we also made asteroid cookies!

Grade school summer camp students learned all about Edwin Binney and how he created the Crayola crayons. We read the book “The Crayola Man” and students were challenged to make a crayon box out of only 2 pieces of construction paper and 3 feet of tape that would be strong enough to hold a 24 pack of crayons. All of the groups were successful! We ended the day reading the book “Splatter”. Students made their own splatter art with watercolor paint! 🎨🖍️

Summer camp started today! K-4 designed their very own aquariums for their goldfish after reading the books "Goldfish on Vacation" and "Made by Maxine". Students also went fishing to solve addition and subtraction problems. We ended the day playing with building blocks and magnetic blocks. 🎣
